Changes for CATE '21

Is there a local company that you'd love to know more about? Do you have a friend or family member who  works for a company that you'd like to promote with your students?

We're making some changes to the CESA 8 Career Academy Teacher Externship Program to allow teachers to craft their own experiences with a company of interest:
  • Start your CATE application by securing approval for your application from your district administrator
  • Complete the CATE Google form with information on your requested externship experience
  • Attend a half day pre-externship workshop virtually in May
  • Attend and participate fully in all externship program days as scheduled with CATE business in June/July
  • Prepare a 10-minute presentation on your experience and a lesson plan to use in your classroom
  • Attend a post-externship workshop in August where you will share your presentation with the rest of the CATE teacher externs
  • Share your CATE presentation back in your district with district staff during inservices or building level meetings
  • Foster ongoing relationships between school district and CATE business partners to benefit students during their ACP planning

District Requirements

  • Decide how to incorporate CATE compensation into their PD and ACP programs. Starting in 2021, teacher externs will be compensated for their participation in the CATE program by their districts, based on current professional development compensation contract language. This  can be done:
         *Through current PD rates
         *Through comp time
*As an option in a personalized PD program
  • Report compensation specifics in the CATE School District Participation Agreement
  • Decide how many teachers in the district will be allowed to participate in  CATE  in a given year
  • Return Participation Agreement to CESA 8 and advertise the CATE opportunity with their district staff
  • Allow teacher externs .5 day release time to attend the CATE pre-externship virtual workshop in May
  • Provide agreed upon compensation to teacher externs upon completion of the CATE program as reported by the CESA 8 CATE Coordinator
  • Encourage teacher externs to share their required CATE presentations to district staff during inservices or building level meetings
  • Foster ongoing relationships between school district and CATE business partners to benefit students during their ACP planning
